Video Games based on Horror Flicks (The Atari Years)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Wizard Video; Atari; 1982)

How can you make a bad game where you play as Leatherface and chop up teens? See this game...

Believe it or not I played this game (on a ROM) and boy does it suck. These graphics are bad even for Atari standards.

Check out Angry Video Game Nerd's hilarious review:

Halloween (Wizard Video; Atari; 1983)

Much better than TCM, which is not hard to be. Another I tried via ROM. They even kept Carpenter's original score but it gets annoying after some time.

Another AVGN funny review:

Frankenstein's Monster
(Atari)

Not technically based on a horror film, but close enough. Another played via ROM. Fun but very repetitive.

Now that was fun!! I had no idea what I was missing!!!.....I was busy on my old Kaypro computer playing all the Zork (Infocom)games at that time, I thought I was so much cooler than the console gamers :D Yes, I know I am a nerd. Looking back now, I guess I was destined to marry a programmer :D

Thanks for the trip down memory lane :D

Cheers!

I played The Texas Chainsaw on Atari. Yes... very bad. Almost the worst Atari game ever. That honor goes to another movie turned game... E.T. Wow... major suckage

Holy hell, I forgot all about those. The best though was Friday the 13th on the really old Macintosh computers. So horribly cheesy, but awesome.

That guy is mad funny.

I can't believe Frankenstein was sooo lame, although he never looked better.

Frog - Infocom! lol wow that takes me back. They were making Zork games into the mid-90s. Halloween and Frankie maybe but with TCM you were not missing anything.

Lisa Marie - E.T. sucked SO bad!! I would probably take hours of slicing and dicing with Leatherface than with E.T. trying to get out of those damn holes.

TS - I never played Friday on the Macintosh but I can only imagine. Ever play Evil Dead on the Commodore? AWFUL! For me to throw shit at anything Evil Dead really tells ya something.

Robyns - I used to love arcade Centipede with the spinning white ball to control your gun.

Emme - Just think Emme, back then someone saw that game and said "Frankenstein looks awesome!" or "Check out those graphics!" lol

So by including "The Atari Years" in your title, are you insinuating that you will be moving on to Nintendo next????? Can't wait! The classic of all classics was released on Nintendo.

Joe - There's nothing wrong with PONG. I still play PONG...well Beer PONG, but close enough.

Ian - Yes...thank all for ROMs. I love going back to play these games!

JLG - Hell to the Yeah! I wanted to see if this topic garnered any attention before I went deeper with the Nintendo era. And the feedback definitely garners another post. I won't get to that until next week, but I will write it.

Beer pong?! Did someone say beer pong? Where? When? LOL!

Cheers!

Wow! good stuff! Amazing how far it's come. I came of age for those games and even back then I think I woulda thought they sucked! ;-)

Woah! As a gamer, I don't even know what to say other than haha!

Thanks for posting those :)

I know there's some kind of crossover potential here, between your blog and mine, but I haven't quite thought of it...

Frog - You and me...Friday night...me vs. you...me with a hangover the next morning after pwning me in beer pong.

Doug - Yes I agree. Look how we went from horse and carriage to rocket-fueled jet in terms of video game evolution.

Kato - haha is the best thing to say about these games. These graphics are cheesily high-larious.

JLG - Keep the mind working brother! I love that movies that should be video games deal. Maybe something like that.

The Thing for PS2 is pretty fun if anyone is interested.

I think a lot of video games that come out nowadays are made with the idea that movies are going to be made from the plot of the game.... And vice versa.... I think the Avatar video game was released before the movie was!
